Do-It-Yourself: How To Paint Your Wooden Furniture

Whether you are repainting a piece of wooden furniture or painting new furniture, wood that will be painted must be cleaned, sanded and primed. As with any project, proper prep work determines the success of the project. Before beginning, do some research and make a comprehensive plan.

If youre looking for a fuss-free, easy way to paint your furniture, Berger iPaint DIY Enamel Painting Kit is just the thing for you! It comes with handy tools like sandpaper, 2 brush and 200 ml of enamel paint. You can choose from bright wood colours like red and yellow if you like accent and bright furniture or simply stick to classic shades like white and black. If you like all things bling, gold and silver can add glam and shine to even the dullest furniture in the house.

Once you get your hands on the painting kit, simply follow the below instructions to paint your wooden furniture:

Step 1: Cleaning

To begin with, clean the wooden surface by removing grime and dust. It is important to get rid of all residue and dirt before you start painting as any dirt or grease will stop the paint from adhering.

Step 2: Sanding

This is a crucial step that most people skip, but it is essential to ensure a good finish. Sanding is the process of removing scratches and any unevenness on the surface. Use the sanding paper provided in the kit and be gentle while sanding. Once done, clean the wood dust before moving to the next step.

Step 3: Priming

Primer helps to hide any stains, marks and damage to the surface. Since wood is porous, it absorbs paint unevenly. Primer can even the wood grain so the surface is smooth and the paint applies properly. To prime, use a paintbrush and evenly apply a coat of diluted primer all over the piece of furniture and let it dry completely.

Step 4: First Coat

Dont load too much paint on the brush. Apply enamel paint for wood available with the kit on the surface in complete strokes, from edge to edge where possible. Brush in one direction only and use light pressure while applying paint. Two coats of paint are better than trying to save time by painting in one go to get the best possible finish.

Tip: When starting to paint with a dry brush, you can prepare it by running water over it. Clean the brush with a thinner after use and in between coats as well. When cleaning the brush, remember to reshape it and allow it to dry by hanging them with bristles facing down when not in use.

Step 5: Second Coat

While most of your painting work is done in the first coat itself, the second coat is just to make sure that the wooden furniture looks even all over the surface. Allow the wood paint to dry for 24 hours before applying the second coat. Only apply paint on the places where it is diminished.

If you want to add a bit of interest, you can also use a can of Berger iPaint Spray Paint for painting knobs, hooks or as an accent. Available in 11 stunning colours, it is the perfect way to add personal touches to furniture.

Tip: Avoid spray painting in an area with a fan or direct sunlight and stay away from heater vents. This kind of environment will cause the unused paint to thicken faster.
