Colour Trivia
Colour Facts For August 2022
- Today, understanding colour in design involves colour wheel, shade variations, complex colour palettes and even colour psychology. However, many centuries ago, the history of colours design consisted of utilising the five oldest pigments, red, yellow, brown, black and white. Carbon blacks were created by heating wood or other plant materials and used during prehistoric times for sketching and canvases. Lime white was created using powdered dried lime which was immersed in water for eight days and then formed into small cakes and dried out in the sun. Red ochre consisted mainly of iron oxide and mixed with other pigments.
- The internet was spellbound after looking at the new James Webb Space Telescope photos last month. However, it may come as a surprise to many that the images are a product of some nifty processing. This is because the images from the Carina nebula and the deep field image are composed from data from the infrared spectrum which has a longer wavelength than visible light. Since human cells aren’t adapted to seeing infrared (except under very specific circumstances), the images go through some processing and the final composite image features all of the colours visible in the photos circulating.
- Variegated plants that have more than one colour on the leaves have become popular among plant collectors. They can be marked with differently coloured stripes, dots, blotches or speckles. While these patterns are usually white, light green or yellow, red and pink variegation is also possible. Many plants with variegated leaves are known as ‘variegata’, a Latin term for ‘variation or diversity’. There may be several reasons as to why plants become variegated from lack of chlorophyll to environmental conditions to spontaneous mutation, a botanist would have to examine the plant’s DNA or look at its leaves under a microscope to find out the right reason.

Tuck plants in unexpected spaces and corners
Add excitement to uninspiring and boring spaces with a few well-placed plants. Alternatively, you can pick a tall plant that fits the corner perfectly. Tiny tabletop potted plants make for an excellent bedside table decor.
Add an accent wall
For living room plant decor, some wall colours work best to complement the lush foliage in the space. Use a soothing shade of blue, an earthy terracotta or a refreshing mint green as an accent wall backdrop for your home plants.
Combine plants with works of art
Plants are a great companion to larger-than-life paintings and artsy accents. This works even better if you have lots of colours in an artwork, the green in plants can help ground in such cases.
Green up the living room
For living room indoor plant decoration ideas, try hanging trailing plants from the ceiling or placing them on the media cabinet. The space where you host guests and spend the most time calls for a statement-maker like a giant monstera, fiddle-leaf fig or a tall and leafy bird of paradise.
Create a focal point using plants
Large plants make for excellent accent pieces to create a focal point in the room. They also look good in empty corners. You can use tall plants to segregate space and work as a focal point at the same time. Consider adding focus lights if the plant is situated in a dark corner that does not receive natural light.

Be mindful of colour choices
In house Feng Shui, the use of colour related to the five elements of earth, metal, water, wood, and fire play a central role in achieving harmony. These five elements are found in nature and are used to bring in energy to create a fine balance.
Earth – yellow
Metal - white, beige, silver
Water - dark blue, black
Wood- blue, green
Fire - red
Make a good first impression
The main door to the room or space is called the "mouth of chi," and it's believed to be the portal through which energy comes into your home. The interior and exterior entry should be well-illuminated and the door number should be clean, hung straight and easily visible. Place a nice black rectangular welcome mat to attract good energy.
Keep the living space clutter-free
Make sure to keep your home spotless. This does not mean that the space must be empty but keep only what you need. Too much mess prevents the energy from flowing freely and also clutters the mind.
Balance out your bedroom
It is important to have space available on both sides of the bed. There should be at least 2 feet of walking space on the left and right sides of the bed, with the headboard against the wall. A solid headboard without bars or holes fastened securely to the bed is believed to create stability and harmony.
Make use of crystals
Whether you want to work on protecting yourself from harm, inviting love or attracting good fortune into your life, there are different crystals to help you out. You can use tourmaline for protection, rose quartz for love and citrine for wealth.
