Unlocking the Potential of Women and Transforming Their Lives

Berger believes that when given equal opportunity, women in our society have shown themselves capable of delivering far greater and more sustainable value to their families and society. A new initiative focused on enabling gender-equal opportunities was recently unveiled by Berger Paints India Ltd.

Sparked by the recent formation of a successful women's masonry group initiative, backed by the now legendary Kudumbasree (a women's cooperative movement in Kerala), Berger Paints aimed to amplify the voices of women in the industry and strengthen their professional development.

To begin the initiative, Berger iTrain teamed up with the Berger Express Painting team to train women in the field of modern-age paint application for homes. The aim of the activity was to empower women from simple backgrounds with the right set of skills, putting them on the path to becoming professional painting and decorating specialists.

The first site where these super-women began their journey was at Maradu, the result of a lead given by the Berger Express Painting team. The iTrain staff and the XP-Team closely trained the newly-formed team in order to ensure the exacting standards of Express Painting are maintained on-site. Post successful training and project completion, the women invested in their own set of Express Painting tools, thereby transforming into a truly professional team.

This unique workforce calls themselves 'Nirakkoottu', which is derived from a Malayalam word meaning 'a bouquet of colours'. At present, the team consists of five women from low-income families who have been willing, perseverant and have gone the extra mile to provide for their families.

These accomplished women are now India's first 100% trained, mechanized, and fully operational Women's Painting Group. They have made a powerful impact and proven themselves in a male-dominated field, building their own success stories and thereby breaking gender barriers.

This project wasn't just about the training; its aim was to empower women at the root level, providing them with a sense of identity, belongingness, respect and confidence. Today, it has become a sustainable route for employment for them, along with giving them financial security.

This training and job creation project has helped them grow their earnings from Rs. 4000-5000 to an average earning of Rs. 15,000-18,000 in a period of 15 months. The initiative has enabled the women to build self-reliant families and in turn improve the quality of their life and that of their families. In addition to that, they are now part of a project which seeks to uplift, enrich and provide opportunities to women and to build a strongly inclusive culture.

Mini, a key member and a satisfied employee of this successful team, speaks about the unique experience, "Thanks to Berger iTrain, today, we have a secure futureā€¦ We never in our wildest imagination thought that we will be totally financially independent and be part of such a successful team like this, that too in a matter of one year".

One of the earliest customers, Mrs. Rossamma Thomas from Tripunithura, said, "Dealing with a ladies team made us feel very comfortable as mostly we are alone in the house in the daytime. Also, we could put forth any suggestions without any hesitation".

Mr. Praveen Menon, our customer from Maradu said, "After the first day's ice-breaking period, my family was very comfortable with the team. It was very comfortable for my mother and wife to tell them their preferences and suggestions. Comparing to normal painters, they were trained painters, hence a positive difference in professionalism was clearly visible."

Berger Paints India Ltd. believes in working towards promoting the socio-economic development of women to help enhance their lives and to pull themselves out of poverty so that they can contribute to society in a meaningful way that impacts future generations as well.
