  1. Natural Colours

Today, understanding colour in design involves colour wheel, shade variations, complex colour palettes and even colour psychology. However, many centuries ago, the history of colours design consisted of utilising the five oldest pigments, red, yellow, brown, black and white. Carbon blacks were created by heating wood or other plant materials and used during prehistoric times for sketching and canvases. Lime white was created using powdered dried lime which was immersed in water for eight days and then formed into small cakes and dried out in the sun. Red ochre consisted mainly of iron oxide and mixed with other pigments.

  2. Night Sky with Satellite

The internet was spellbound after looking at the new James Webb Space Telescope photos last month. However, it may come as a surprise to many that the images are a product of some nifty processing. This is because the images from the Carina nebula and the deep field image are composed from data from the infrared spectrum which has a longer wavelength than visible light. Since human cells aren’t adapted to seeing infrared (except under very specific circumstances), the images go through some processing and the final composite image features all of the colours visible in the photos circulating.

  3. White Green Leaf

Variegated plants that have more than one colour on the leaves have become popular among plant collectors. They can be marked with differently coloured stripes, dots, blotches or speckles. While these patterns are usually white, light green or yellow, red and pink variegation is also possible. Many plants with variegated leaves are known as ‘variegata’, a Latin term for ‘variation or diversity’. There may be several reasons as to why plants become variegated from lack of chlorophyll to environmental conditions to spontaneous mutation, a botanist would have to examine the plant’s DNA or look at its leaves under a microscope to find out the right reason.
