women's day special - Shami Goregaonkar

On the occasion of Women’s Day, we caught up with Shami Goregaoker on what inspires her, and her views and ideas as a woman in the field of design. We hope you enjoy this tête-à-tête!

Berger Paints India: What inspires you to think creatively and fuels you to ‘paint your imagination’? (Paint your imagination is Berger Paints’ tagline).

Shami Goregaoker: Nature with its myriad of forms and colours always keep me inspired.

Berger Paints India: Which is your favourite project till date? Tell us more about it?

Shami Goregaoker: I’ve liked working on all my projects. But Gold Dust is the favourite because we have used bold colours and metallic accents very well.

Berger Paints India: How do you achieve work-life balance?

Shami Goregaoker: I enjoy working immensely, so it doesn’t seem like “work” to me. It is a great feeling to be talking to creative people all day long. There is a lot of flexibility in terms of work hours, in what I do. Besides, interacting with the fraternity & looking up new products is very stimulating and can be done during my free time. It also helps that my husband (architect) & my son (budding photographer) have very creative minds so we end up having conversations that keep inspiring each other.

Berger Paints India: What made you choose architecture/interior design as a career?

Shami Goregaoker: My fascination for colours & design started early, more so as my father is also an architect. Being a SoBo girl, Sunday outings at Marine Drive, Nariman Point, Fountain & Malabar Hill became the norm followed by dinner conversations about the beautiful Art Deco buildings & lovely promenades. I guess all of this gradually drew me to the world of design.

Berger Paints India: What do you enjoy most about interior decorating?

Shami Goregaoker: Interior designing is a process which lets you get acquainted with people and their various different lifestyles. The best part is that there is no limit to creativity and you can keep on growing.

Berger Paints India: Which design trend are you most excited about?

Shami Goregaoker: Bold colours and royal fabrics like velvet & satins are always a pleasure to work with. They instantly up the luxe quotient & help to create the desired ambience.

Berger Paints India: How does it feel to be a women architect/interior designer amongst male counterparts?

Shami Goregaoker: Back in the day, women in the design field could be compared to background artists, always in the shadows. Fortunately today, the design profession is gender-neutral as are most creative professions. There is immense respect & talent for creativity.

Berger Paints India: Which books are you currently reading/what are your hobbies?

Shami Goregaoker: I am currently trying out an art form called Aerosol Graphia, which is a form of spray painting. I have prepared some art work which lies quietly in my bedroom.
